I moved from Texas to Missouri in August of 2016. To file my Missouri state tax return, should i file a part-year resident filing as a resident or a part-year resident filing as a nonresident?
It depends. You can try both methods, but chances are that you will be better claiming your part-year as a nonresident. If you claim as a resident, Missouri taxes all of your income, applies all of the credits as a resident, and then gives you a credit for the tax you pay to your other state. Since while you were in TX you pay no state tax, you probably don't want Missouri to tax that income unless all Missouri credits more than make up for the additional tax you would pay. Therefore, part-year nonresident is likely your best option.
