Question

My mom has very simple returns. for PA state, she (88-yr-old) misread a line, put total income on the line above-gambling income. mail in a letter explain, correct line?

this is for 2018, 2017 same mistake, state noticed, thought was more income. we are thinking of make a copy of filed return for 2018, correct the line, write an explanation letter. will that work? or need to file an amended return? many thanks!!

  • You need to amend the return to correct the issue.

When you say "state noticed", does that mean that the state wrote you a letter about it? If so, then read the letter carefully to see if they are asking you to amend the return (they might not because if the taxing agency accepts your explanation in your responding letter, they may make the amendment themselves).

But if there was no letter from the state, then do as Critter says and amend the return. I am not familiar with the Pennsylvania amendment process but I assume there a place (like on the amended federal return) to explain why you are amending the return.
