No.  If neither of you earned money while physically in California, you only have Michigan income.   Do I need to file a nonresident return for an out-of-state employer?

Answer "No" to the question if your husband is a W-2 employee.  But answer "Yes" if he is an independent contractor and his income is reported to him on a 1099-NEC or 1099-MISC rather than on a W-2.

California taxes non-resident independent contractors on income from services provided to clients located in California.
