If I have a past due amount for Virginia state taxes, will they automatically deduct it from my state refund?

The state will seize your state tax refund and apply the refund to the back taxes owed.  If the refund satisfies the debt and there is a remainder the state will send you the remainder of the refund.  If the refund does not satisfy the debt then the state will send you a bill in the mail for amount remaining to be paid plus any penalty or interest owed on the unpaid debt.
