I am a resident of VA and worked partime as a college student in W VA. On my W2 box 15 has VA but the employs state ID is missing. What do I need to do?

You will only have to file a Virginia tax return.  You can try to use the federal tax ID for the state or leave it blank.  

 

Because Virginia and West Virginia have a tax reciprocity agreement, you generally only pay income tax to your home state of Virginia. Since your employer correctly withheld Virginia taxes (indicated by "VA" in Box 15), the missing State ID number is essentially a clerical detail that will not stop your return from being processed. 

 

State IDs are used for internal state tracking, but the IRS and State Departments of Revenue primarily rely on your Federal EIN (found in Box b) to identify your employer.
