You don't have to file your mi state return with your federal return. When you go to file, choose only to file your federal return, you would have to pay for the state return now even though you are not filing it with your federal, the cost for the Online state return is $39.99.
Can I file my federal taxes now and skip my state for later?--------------------------------------------------------------
If you don't want to pay for the state program now, you can delete the state & go back later to complete the state return & file.
