Do I count number of hours worked in a state or times entered a state to get number of days when worked in another state from where I lived?

Simple answer: count hours.

You allocate the portion of your salary earned in CA. If your employer does not do that for you on your W-2, you use the most reasonable method. Since you apparently don't spent the full day working in CA, hours would be most reasonable.
