Have worked remotely throughout 2021 from home office in NJ for CA based company.  Spent <30-days in CA on-site.  No CA tax witholding by my employer.  CA schedule S makes it sound as though CA state income tax form is still required to be filed.  Is it?

Yes, since you physically worked in CA, even though it was for less than 30 days, you will still need to file a CA nonresident return for the days you were physically present in CA.
