Question

accounting for discrepancy between federal income and total state income

i'm a non-resident of MA tho all my wages come from work in MA.  My MA return (non resident) is alerting me that my federal income exceeds MA income by more than 10% and must be explained.  I've included interest and dividends earned on my federal but not MA because I assume the banks and investments are not from MA.  How does one determine what state bank and investment dividends and interest are associated with.  Does it need to be declared on state return as part of overall income?  Thanks

If you are a non resident, the interest and dividends would not be MA source unless they were coming directly from a MA source such as an investment property in MA.  If it is just general bank interest and stocks and such, this would be on your home state return not the non-resident state return.
