topic Dependent Earning 1099-NEC in Self employed

My grandson, 17, worked part time for a screen printing shop and was paid $5,500 on a 1099-NEC. That was his total income for 2022. He is a full time student. Does he have to report as "self-employment" due to the 1099-NEC? Or does he even need to file at all?

Yes, he needs to report the income as self-employment income. Even though he is probably being claimed as a dependent, he does have a filing requirement due to the nature of his income being over $400 of net income from self-employment.
