Since loans aren't considered taxable income, you’ll need to ask the sender for a corrected 1099-NEC showing a $0 balance. Then, make sure you save the corrected 1099-NEC in case you receive any notices from the IRS requesting information on the missing 1099-NEC income. Even though it is zero, you may get an automated letter that is sent out when the computer detects there should be a 1099-NEC entry.

As MindyB, mentioned in the previous post, the first step is to contact the sender and ask them to correct the information. It is recommended that you do this in writing so that you keep a record of the contact.

If after you contact them, they have not corrected the information by the end of February, call the IRS at 800-829-1040.

Topic no. 154, Form W-2 and Form 1099-R (what to do if incorrect or not received)

@jojo-winuser
