Answer to question:

1099-MISC

I managed to delete schedule C; but I noticed in comparing the amended return with the original return that, rather than showing that I had received $650 in this 1099 – MISC, it showed the increase in income to be $1100 plus. I didn’t notice this until I had already filed my amended return and it was already accepted. I was charged $144 more tax as a result of this $650, which makes me think that the calculation was made as though Schedule C was included.

The $650 income was neither a business nor a hobby; but I was in a medical test with my retina specialist for three visits, one per month.

I received a 1099 for income for a trial research with Austin Retina Associates. I do not have a business. What do I do to keep Turbo Tax from making a Schedule C?

It depends. As indicated we need additional details to provide the specific information you need.

You can decide if it is hobby or business income. This IRS link will help you: Business or Hobby?

Key elements:

A hobby requires you to report the income you received and under the current tax law, Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA), no expenses are allowed to be used to reduce the money collected even if you itemize deductions.

A business allows you to deduct the costs necessary to obtain the income. The law explains that 'you must be engaged in the activity to produce a profit'. The test under IRS tax law is that you must show a profit three out of every five consecutive years to be considered a business.

Once you decide what type of income this is you can use the links below to see how to report.

Each 1099 has various entry procedures - 1099-K, 1099-MISC, 1099-NEC, 1099-DIV, 1099-INT. Most likely yours is one of the first three forms.

@JKPG

Based on the numbers you stated, it sounds like the income was entered twice. Check your return for a duplicate entry.

If you enter Form 1099-MISC in the Other Common Income section, at the screen "Does one of these uncommon situations apply?", a list of options appears from which you can select that includes reasons for Form 1099-MISC other than self-employed income.

In the alternative, you can enter the amount under Other Reportable Income. In TurboTax Online:

Go to Wages and Income

Scroll down to Less Common Income

Go to Miscellaneous Income

Select Other Reportable Income and follow the prompts. Enter a description for the reason for the payment.

@JKPG
