Are you maintaining a home on the West Coast? Do you have a place to go back to or you are just planning to go back?

If you do not, then you are not considered to be just temporarily in the East coast state.

When you are filing, you will enter your current state as your state of residence. So if you became a resident of the east coast state on 7/1/2024, then you would file a part year resident return for your current state including only the income that you earned while a resident of that state. Since your old state does not have an income tax, you will only need to file one part year resident return.

Thx Vanessa.

Are you maintaining a home on the West Coast? Yes

Do you have a place to go back to or you are just planning to go back? I'm going back home (West coast) after my 2 yrs of Medical Residency

How do I enter my the following in my 2024 turbotax if I only doing Med Residency for 2 yrs in North Carolina:

State of Residency: Do I put down WA or North Carolina?

xx Lives in another state? YES

Previous state of residence? Do I put down WA or North Carolina?

Date you became a resident of your new State: 07/01/2024

For state of residency, you will select NC and for previous state select WA. Since you will be in NC for more than 12 months, NC will consider you a resident of the state. For 2024, you would only be a part year resident.

In your situation, it is not going to make much of a difference on your return. Regardless of your residency status, since you are earning the money in NC, you would have to pay taxes on it. Since your "home state" does not have any income tax, you will not have to include your NC income on another return.
