topic 1040 sr in Retirement tax questions

This new form 1040-sr is not letting me file electronically.

I have been retired for a few years now and e filed my federal taxes last year (2018) using TurboTax (online) with no problems. Now I get the message "a tax situation in your federal return that makes it in-eligible for e-filling" (several lines have a zero value). My information from last year has not changed significantly except for minor dollar amounts on form SSA-1099. What has changed is the use of the new form 1040-sr instead of 1040A.

I have also been successful in previous years filing online using TurboTax on 1040A.

Is this a bug? From reading other posts I understand that there is no other option for seniors besides 1040-sr.

The 1040-A does not exist anymore for tax year 2018 and later. For seniors, the 1040-SR replaced many aspects of the old 1040-A. If you do have several areas with $0 in income, then you cannot e-file. However, you can still print and mail your return.

IRS.gov has more information on the phase-out of the 1040-A here.

The 1040SR is the same as the regular 1040 just larger type. Same line numbers. You automatically get the SR if you are 65. If you are using the Desktop program there is a way to force the one you want.

You can't efile if you only have SS or SSDI income. You must have entered some other kind of income last year. If you want to file you will have to print and mail it. Or you can try adding $1 of interest to let you efile. Make up a fake 1099Int.

Enter a 1099-Int under

Federal

Wages & Income

Interest and Dividends

Interest on 1099INT - Click the Start or Update button

The 1040 and the 1040SR are the same form, just the SR has larger print. Using one form or the other will not change any numbers on the form or calculations.

What exactly did the letter say? It is not likely that the form type was the reason for the delay, more than likely there was some type of information missing or incorrect.

Print out your return or save it as a pdf file. You should always save a copy of both the PDF and the tax file ending in .tax2021 after you file. Incase you ever need a copy or need to amend in the future or open your actual return to see how you entered something.

Turbo Tax automatically gives you the 1040SR if you or your spouse is 65 or older.

How to get or print a copy after filing
https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/prior-year-return/help/how-do-i-get-a-copy-of-a-return-i-filed-this-year-in-turbotax-online/01/25932
