topic Social security tax refund in Retirement tax questions

In one section of my return it said I should get $1900 in refund for overpayment of social security tax. However, I cannot see that the $1900 is added anywhere into my refund calculation. How can I confirm this?

If you had too much social security tax withheld (multiple employer situation), TurboTax will calculate the excess and apply it as a credit against your income tax on your income tax return. If applicable, it will appear on line 11 of your Schedule 3.

If you do not see an amount on line 11, it is because it was only ONE employer that withheld too much social security. If this is the case, you cannot claim the excess as a credit against your income tax. Have your employer correct your W-2 and pay you back the excess amount withheld.

If your employer will not cooperate, manually correct your W-2 and complete Form 843 to claim a refund. To manually correct your W-2, take the number in Box 3 and multiply it by .062 and enter that amount into Box 4 (do not enter an amount larger than 7,347). This will remove the error from TurboTax.

Form 843 is not available in TurboTax. For additional information see:

IRS Form 843 and here are instructions and mailing address: IRS Instructions for Form 843

Mail it in separately. Make a copy to keep with your tax return paperwork.
