You'll get a 1099-R if you received $10 or more from a retirement plan. Here's how to enter your 1099-R in TurboTax:

Open (continue) return if you don't already have it open.

Inside TurboTax, search for 1099-R and select the Jump to link in the search results.

Answer Yes on the Your 1099-R screen, then select Continue.

If you land on the Your 1099-R Entries screen instead, select Add Another 1099-R.

Select how you want to enter your 1099-R (import or type it in yourself) and then follow the instructions. You can add up to 20 1099-Rs.

Thanks for writing. I didn't get a 1099, just a notice saying the distribution was a 401a as opposed to 401k. Any advice on that?

Thanks

When did the distribution occur? Was it in 2019 because if so, regardless whether it be a 401A or 401K, it should have been reported on a 1099R. Contact the trustee of the plan. Meanwhile, please review this link that explains the difference between 401a and 401K. The reporting requirement is the same for both plans and that is the issuance of a 1099R reporting the distribution.

Ok, so we need to request a 1099R.

Thanks, this helped. 🙂
