NYS withholding can not be equal to or greater than the gross or state distribution. I do not have a box 14a and box 14 is for taxes I did pay. If I change box 14 to no taxes paid my taxes due on the form skyrocket to those that I said pay but without a box 14 a I do not know how to finalize anythin.

Jerald Wayne St Cla In his in

If there is no amount in box 14 on the Form 1099-R leave boxes 14, 15 and 16 blank (empty). If you still get a message then delete the Form 1099-R and re-enter manually.

I do have smounts on my 1099R’s, like $2400 one, $265.07 on another, and $2661.78 on a third, all monies paid to the State which apparently I can not get credit for.

@Helaine

Box 14a just refers to the first line for state boxes 14, 15, 16.

....some folks have a second state line when they move to a new state, and thus the software just refers to them as 14a,15a, 16a....and 14b,15b,16b to make sure they are looking at the correct state line.

______________________

NY is very picky about having a number in box 16, even if it is empty on most-or-many 1099-R forms.

Your solution is to put the vaaue of box 1 into box 16....even if it is empty on your 1099-R.

(some of us say it should be the value of box 2a if 2a has a non-zero value in it....but the box 1 solution is supposed to work)
