To clarify, you withdrew more than the RMD and rolled over the excess amount?

If yes, then please review these steps (assuming you have code 7 in box 7):

Click on "Search" on the top right and type “1099-R”

Click on “Jump to 1099-R” and enter your 1099-R

Enter the RMD amount for this account on the "Let's get more information about your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD)" screen (this should be less than the amount distributed)

Continue until "How much of this distribution applied to your December 31, 2025 RMD?" screen and select "Some of this distribution was a RMD" and enter the amount of RMD (this should be less than the amount distributed)

On the "Tell us if you moved the money through a rollover or conversion" screen select "I rolled over some or all of it to an IRA or other retirement account within the time limits (normally 60 days)"

Please note RMDs cannot be rolled over, therefore you only get the rollover question if your distribution was more than your RMD.

I imported a gross distribution from my 401K but it doesn't show that I rolled $6,000 back into the same IRA within 60 days. How do I fix the correct distribution amount. Does TurboTax ask me if I rolled some of this distribution back?

Yes, after the Form 1099-R is entered there will be a series of follow-up questions that will need to be answered.

One of those questions asked what you did with the distribution. This is where you can select that you rolled some or all of it to an IRA or other retirement account. Then, the next screen will allow you to enter the amount that was rolled back to the same account.

Go to the Form 1099-R input section to edit the imported Form 1099-R and then go through the follow-up questions.

I went to Form 1099 R and entered the actual amount of RMD but Turbotax did not ask if I rolled the difference back to the original IRA. It refused to change the amount to the taxable amount.
