For a rollover, in TurboTax Online, enter your form 1099-R by following these steps:

Open your tax return

Click on Federal in the left-hand column, then on Wages & Income

Navigate to the list of income categories

Locate the section Retirement Plans and Social Security and click on the arrow on the right

Click Start next to IRAs, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R).

Enter your form 1099-R and follow the interview

When you arrive to the page Tell us if you moved the money through a rollover or conversion, click on the radio button I rolled over some or all of it to an IRA or other retirement account within the time limits (normally 60 days)

(your) Step 7 never arrives. I only get asked if I moved funds to a Roth IRA. The page specifically says to answer no if I transferred to a traditional IRA. When I select NO it pops out of the entry back to the income list. If I answer yes it still does not work.

This should be simple. I selected full distribution, Box 7 is "G" for full distribution and I indicated $o taxed. That should trigger the traditional rollover but it does not. I've gone through the process a dozen times. I've even gone into my browser (Safari) preferneces ahnd empried the cache and deleted cookies, etc. in case something is stuck there.

When you have Code G, TurboTax essentially assumes it's a rollover to a Traditional account unless you tell it otherwise. To get the correct "nontaxable" result, follow these exact steps:

Enter the 1099-R: Ensure Box 1 has your total. Box 2a is $0, and Box 7 is G.

The "Roth 401(k)" Question: It will ask, "Did you move this money from a 401(k) to a Roth 401(k)?" * Answer NO.

The "Roth IRA" Question: It will then ask, "Was this money rolled over to a Roth IRA?"Answer NO.

After you answer NO to both Roth questions, the interview will end and return you to the income list. This is expected. Here’s why. By saying NO to both questions, you’re letting TurboTax know this was a direct rollover (Code G) and not a Roth conversion. That means it’s a nontaxable rollover to a traditional account, like your 403(b).

Thanks, Dave

My problem was resolved but the TurboTax issue is not. It should be clear to any novice using Turbotax what is happening, not by potentially eliminating (rational) alternatives. When answering No to both Roth questions and popping out of the process back to the income list leaves one hanging. I didn't realize there was only one alternative because I had looked up "G" and this description said it was used for a full payout or a rollover. So, it appeared to me there was more than one more choice. In any case, clarity should be the rule when dealing with software/user processes, even if redundent.
