Hello,

I am trying to confirm that as a retired PSO receiving a state pension retirement income, if I pay for my insurance premiums post tax from that income source that I am able to deduct up to $3000 from my 1099-R amount? Turbo tax used to ask me that question, but his year did not and I did not catch it until after filing. I believe it went on line 5A with the PSO box checked and the deducted amount for insurance premiums in 5B.

Thank you

Yes, this is how it is reported in TurboTax.

Go to Wages & Income > Retirement Plans and Social Security (1099-R).

Edit your state pension 1099-R.

Continue past the main box entries until you see a screen titled "Do any of these uncommon situations apply?"

Check the box for "This money is from being a Public Safety Officer."

The next screen will specifically ask for the amount of health insurance premiums you paid (up to $3,000).

Since you've already filed and the $3,000 reduction wasn't applied, you will need to file an Amended Return (Form 1040-X).. The amended form is not available until 2-25, so you will need to wait for this. Here is how to file once it's available.

How to Start the Amendment (1040-X) After 2-25

TurboTax Online:

Log in and go to your Tax Home.

Scroll down to Your tax returns & documents and select 2025.

Select Amend (change) return and then Amend using TurboTax Online.

TurboTax Desktop:

Open the tax file you already filed.

Go Federal>other tax situations

Other Tax forms

Select Amend a Filed Return
