I had to repay SSA in 2025 for survivor benefits received in 2024. These benefits were reported on my 2024 return. I see in Pub 915 that there could be a credit available. How do I trigger this in Turbo Tax Deluxe Desktop?

What is the exact amount that you repaid?

Did your receive any kind of Social Security benefits in 2025? Did you get a Form SSA-1099 for 2025? What are the exact amounts in boxes 3, 4, and 5? If you got more than one SSA-1099 for 2025 with your Social Security number in box 2, list them separately.

Just give amounts, no names, Social Security numbers, or other personal information. This is a public website.

You don't have to do anything except enter your SSA-1099 in TurboTax. You get the deduction for the repayment automatically because the repayment is already subtracted from the amount that you enter on your 2025 tax return, which is the amount in box 5. You pay tax on only $8,512 instead of $24,768.

All the complicated calculations in Pub. 915 are needed only if the repayment is more than your 2025 benefits, so you end up with a negative number in box 5.
