You can follow these steps to edit your RMD entries in Form 1099-R:

Login to your TurboTax Account

Click on "Search" on the top right and type “1099-R”

Click on “Jump to 1099-R” and select edit next to the 1099-R you need to correct

Continue until "How much of the $XXXXX was a RMD?" screen, select "The entire distribution was an RMD" (or select "Only part of this distribution was a RMD" and enter the amount of RMD) and click "Continue".

On the "Let's get more information about your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD)" screen enter the amount of the RMD from this distribution again.

In the alternative, you could delete the 1099-R in question and reenter it.

See this tax tips article for more information about Form 1099-R.

This did allow me to enter the RMD value again, but the calculation that turbo tax comes up with for RMD is incorrect. It would result in a tax penalty for me. I am doing the returns by hand to avoid being hit with a penalty.

TurboTax does not directly calculate your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD); instead, it helps you report it by prompting you to enter the amount from your 1099-R form after you take the distribution, which is based on the prior year's Dec 31 account balance divided by an IRS Publication 590-B life expectancy factor.

If TurboTax asks you to identify the amount of the distribution that represented an RMD, identify the RMD amount.

From an IRS FAQ page:

Generally, a RMD is calculated for each account by dividing the prior December 31 balance of that IRA or retirement plan account by a life expectancy factor that the IRS publishes in Tables in Publication 590-B, Distributions from Individual Retirement Arrangements (IRAs). Choose the life expectancy table to use based on your situation.

Joint and last survivor table II - use this table if the sole beneficiary of the account is your spouse and your spouse is more than 10 years younger than you.

Uniform lifetime table III - use this if your spouse is not your sole beneficiary or your spouse is not more than 10 years younger

Single life expectancy table I - use this if you are a beneficiary of an account (an inherited IRA)

See the worksheets to calculate required minimum distributions and the FAQ below for different rules that may apply to 403(b) plans.

She was not under RMD amounts in 2025. She will have to do this starting in 2026. I entered the correct amount when it asked for my IRA. That value was not used.

This experience has been reported for further investigation. In the meantime, report an RMD amount for all 1099-R income that might be subject to an RMD. Allocate the total across the 1099-Rs to work around the software limitations.

I have filed using manual input from the IRS site. I'm not impressed with Turbo Tax calculations which would have generated an IRS penalty and a loss of over $600. And then having to deal with filing an amended return.

I would like a refund of the $88 I was charged since I never filed using Turbo Tax.
