topic WV Teacher Retirement in Retirement tax questions

While trying to file my WV state tax on Turbo Tax, it told me that my WV teacher retirement was only partially taxable and that I could subtract $2,000 of that pension total or $8,000 of all my combined pensions if I am 65 or older. It supposedly did it automatically and then told me to adjust my federal to show the adjusted amount. I am not sure how to do this and am leery of entering amounts that are not on my actual 1099-R. Can anyone clarify this to me or point me in the right direction, because I do not want to make a mistake. Thanks in advance!

Yes, you are correct, pensions received from the Virginia Teachers Retirement System you can deduct up to $2,000 from your West Virginia income. When you enter your form 1099-R:

Open or continue your return.

In the Federal section, select Wages & Income.

Scroll to locate Retirement Plans and Social Security.

Select Start or Revisit next to IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R).

Enter the information on the form as it is; after you enter the form make sure that when the program asks "Where is your distribution from?" Select that it's a qualified government retirement distribution. The program will ask additional questions about your retirement. Continue and finish your federal return.

TurboTax will calculate your allowed deduction in the state return. When you get to your West Virginia return, the program will have a screen that'll show your adjustments to the retirement income.
