Hi,

I applied for Social Security (SS) in 2024 to begin in 2025. I then submitted SSA 521 Request for withdrawal of application on 3/9/2025. Unfortunately, the form wasn't processed until Oct 2025 and I kept receiving monthly benefits, in spite of multiple visits to local SSA office and countless calls to SSA. A SS representative somehow stopped the payments. However, I received benefits for eight months against which my Medicare Part B were deducted. I finally received a letter on 12/3 to remit a check to repay the benefits + cost of Medicare in full. The check I sent to SS Philadelphia on 12/6 was received by on12/9. The check cleared my account on 12/23. Meanwhile SSA emailed a SSA 1099 form to my SS inbox noting benefits paid in Box 5.

I've been on the phones again requesting a corrected SSA 1099 to reflect the benefits were repaid in full in 2024.

On 2/26, a SS agent said she would have a supervisor call me within 5-7 days. Unfortunately, on 2/26,I received an email to my SS inbox that a representative from the local office would call me today. Well, the call never came. I need to file my taxes and have zero confidence that SS will issue a corrected 1099 form this year.

I file taxes through Turbotax. Given this situation should I mail in my taxes and include the supporting documentation that confirms the SS and Medicare were repaid in full in 2024 and SS never reissued a corrected SSA 1099.

Should I file my taxes manually and include supporting documentation on this matter or what other options are available to me.

Thank you

I would suggest at this point that you file an extension to allow a little more time for this to work itself out.

If you are concerned that you may owe a balance due this year, prepare your return in TurboTax without the Social Security benefits to determine the approximate amount that you owe. You can then make that payment when you file your extension in order to avoid any late payment penalties.

An extension will give you an additional six (6) months to get the 1099 corrected so that your records match the IRS records when you file.
