topic Form 1099-R in Retirement tax questions

My form 1099-R shows federal income tax withholding and it says that I must attach a copy to my return. Does this mean I cannot file electronically and must mail a paper copy to the IRS? As for the California state tax return, there is also withholding but it says "file this copy... when required". Can I file electronically or must also mail a paper copy to the Franchise Tax Board?

Yes, you can file electronically.

The IRS and the State of California get a copy of the form.

TurboTax will include the information from the form so that the IRS and State of California can match their copy.

You do not need to mail your return to include that 1099-R

That just means if you mail your return you should include a copy of the 1099R if it shows any withholding on it.
