I'm now 82. My returns for the past 10 years have not required reporting a RMD. I recall reading a statement that the RMD was the taxable amount, but I don't recall the source. I think it was the Texas Teacher Retirement System.

If you are entering a 1099R for a pension, you just need to say it was all an RMD.

For pensions, Say all of it is the RMD. If you need to start taking the RMD it will ask you if it is the RMD. Say yes. Anything your pension pays you is considered to be the RMD. Traditional pensions automatically fulfill the rules of an RMD. So for the RMD question put in the same amount as box 1.

If you’ve been using Turbo Tax all these years when you turned 72 it should have been asking you about the RMD.
