topic The SSA reported as income (1099, box 3) an amount that was not income, it was a distribution from my mother's estate (already taxed). How do I address this in TurboTax? in Retirement tax questions

The amount in question was previously included as in come on my deceased mother's final 1099. But the SSA took it out of her checking account, gave it to me and also reported it in my 1099. I explained the situation to a SSA rep and her response was that I need to address it with the IRS.

Yes, you can do it by using the steps below. When you enter your SSA-1099 as usual with the full amount being reported. Next you can remove the portion that should not be duplicated on your return.

Open your TurboTax Online/Mobile or TurboTax Desktop return:

Search (upper right) > type social security income > Click the jump to.. link > Enter your SSA-1099

Other Miscellaneous Income:

Sign into your TurboTax Online account

Go to Tax Home (left panel) Wages and Income section

Scroll to Less Common Income > Select Miscellaneous Income, 1099-A, 1099-C

Select Other reportable Income >

Enter the description SS Duplicate and a negative amount (-100)

Thanks for the clear answer.

The SSA provided a corrected 1099 so now I must amend the 2023 return. I prepared an amended return with TT 2023. When I finished amending the return, TT provided the form 1040-X as well as an amended 10040-SR. Do I need to mail in the amended 1040-SR along with the 1040-X?

Yes, I would include the Form 1040-SR because the social security amount changed. There is no need to send anything else. It's also not necessary to file the Form SSA-1099. The IRS and Social Security systems exchange information on a regular basis.
