SSA-1099 has incorrect amounts

In 2022 I applied / received/ paid back social security benefits in full.

The 1099 they sent shows the correct amount in box 3. DOUBLE the amount (repaid) in box 4. Then a negative amount (overpayment?) in box 5.

The local SSA looked up my account and verified the numbers were correct as printed.

So can I post these numbers in the return? Then wait for the IRS to question the error?

Not my error. The document provider (SSA) verified document is correct.

I do see that the negative amount seems to have no bearing on any other data entered on the return.

Yes, enter your SSA-1099 as issued.

Your gross benefits are shown in box 3 of Form SSA-1099 or Form RRB-1099. Your repayments are shown in box 4. The amount in box 5 shows your net benefits for 2022 (box 3 minus box 4).

Use the amount in box 5 to figure whether any of your benefits are taxable.

box 5 is a negative number.

The benefits were repaid in 2022 prior to tax liability being incurred.

Data entered as noted on 1099.

My concern is IRS coming back to me for the error.

You should not be concerned about the IRS contacting you about the SSA-1099 Form. When it was checked at the local SSA office, they advised that there were no errors.

You are 100% wrong in your advice. My gross amount is way more than what I got. I have all the correct amounts. I contacted SSA yesterday and these people are uneducated and could not help not one iota. The idiot kept me on the phone for 50 minutes and could not answer one question nor get me a supervisor or manager. Now I have to go into the office and pray these idiots can clearly see the figures, what they should be. They are making my life hell. I will be calling the IRS too make an appointment.

Then we are royally screwed. What kind of advice are you giving???? You are 100% wrong. These are the biggest idiots in the world at the SSA office, so uneducated. They have no accountants there, or anyone to clearly see these amounts are wrong and fraudulant. I might need to hire a lawyer.
