topic SSA question in Retirement tax questions

In 2022 I was audited by my State. So I go to a CPA to see what's up. The CPA lists my SS Benefits as taxable on Page 1 of the 1040.

I do my taxes on TurboTax and find that the SSA number is not taxable. Did TT do something in the background of their program that I'm missing or did the CPA make an error?

Help...and thank you for answering.

Each year is separate. Your SS might have been taxable in 2022 and not taxable in 2023. What line is it on for 2022? 1040 Line 6a is for the gross SS amount and line 6b is the taxable amount.

Up to 85% of Social Security becomes taxable when all your other income plus 1/2 your social security, reaches:

Married Filing Jointly: $32,000

Single or head of household: $25,000

Married Filing Separately: 0

Thank you for responding. It is line 6b on 1040 SR. In 2022, there was a zero "0" and for 2023, 85% was taxed.

So in 2022 the CPA put 0 on line 6b? Did you have less income in 2022? You have to ask him about 2022. Did you have more total income in 2023? Are you ok now or still have questions?

I'm just puzzled because in 2022 I used TurboTax and line 6b was "0." I started TurboTax again for 2023 and "0" appeared again on line 6b, but the CPA version to clear up the audit has $52,273 Taxable. The actual Benefit for married, joint filing for 2023 is $61,498...exactly 85%. I was just wondering why the CPA's number was different.

I'm confused by your years. You can't compare 2023 with 2022. The CPA fixed up 2022. Now your 2023 return shows 0?

Actually, it's the opposite. TT was 0 for 2023 (same in 2022), but the CPA has 85% of SS for 2023. Sorry for any confusion, but I suffer from preparing and submitting taxes every year.

I would check with him to see why you are getting 0 on Turbo Tax. You must be entering some income wrong. Are you getting the right taxable amounts for your IRA and pensions on lines 4b and 5b?

To see the Social Security Benefits Calculation Worksheet in Turbo Tax Online version you would have to save your return with all the worksheets to your computer. Or if you are using the Desktop CD/Download Software you can switch to Forms Mode (click Forms in the upper right) and click on SS in the list on the left side.

Before filing, You can preview the 1040 or print the whole return

https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/accessing/help/how-do-i-preview-my-turbotax-online-return-before-filing/00/26160
