Well...i'm not sure which software platform you are using, but I'm using Windows Desktop software adn it operates properly.

What are you using? a) Online software thru a Browser?
.....OR b) the Desktop software on your MAC?
(I can only test the Online software as I don't have a MAC...and I can't fully see the Online IA forms..but might be able to figure out if it is doing it right)
_____________________
Beyond those, you could check your interview at step #3 and see if you went in yourself and put in a 6000 deduction in there..you are not supposed to do that yourself. (but did you actually have an IPERS 1099-R or Military 1099-R form?)

....This explanation was not useful to you?

If you have more questions, you can explain your 1099-R income sources, and perhaps we can lead you thru it (though it can get messy in a forum like this)

part 3 explains how "some" can come out of line 9, and another 6000 out at line 21...but only if you have a military or IPERS 1099-R form...and enough total 1099-R income such that there is at least 6000 remaining in line 9 (per person over age 55)

Thank you for taking all the time to answer. The explanation was useful, & I agree with it. What I'm struggling with is why the turbotax software seems to disagree with both of us. I want to know if I mis-typed something, but if I did, it must have been something not very obvious. On the other hand, there must be thousands of folks that would have encountered the same error (if it is a software error), so I would have expected a correction to have been made by now. The program seemed to take the exclusion correctly in previous years.
