Did you get an error code or message when inputting your Form 1099-R? Or was the e-file or your return rejected?

The error could be as simple as a missing or mistyped letter or number. A payer’s EIN number has 9 digits with the format: 99-9999999.

Your 1099-R form is incorrect or is missing information.

The payer’s 1099-R form was imported into TurboTax resulting in an undetected error.

If it is not letting you enter the payer name while you are entering the Form 1099-R, try deleting the Form 1099-R and re-enter it. Make sure that the EIN number matches what is on your Form 1099-R. If you imported this Form 1099-R, try entering it manually.

Use these steps to delete your Form 1099-R:

On the top row of the TurboTax online screen, click on Search (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax locate the search box in the upper right corner)

This opens a box where you can type in “1099-R” and click the magnifying glass (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax, click Find)

The search results will give you an option to “Jump to 1099-R”

Click on the blue “Jump to 1099-R” link

This will take you to the Form 1099-R summary page. Click Delete or the trash can icon next to the one you need to remove.

Here's how to re-enter your 1099-R in TurboTax:

Open or continue your return.

In the Federal section, select Wages & Income.

Scroll to locate Retirement Plans and Social Security.

Select Start or Revisit next to IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R).

You can also find the 1099-R section using Search. Open your return, enter 1099-r in the search bar, and select the Jump to 1099-r link.

If you got a reject error when filing your return:

E-file reject code F1099R-502-02 happens when the employer’s name or federal Employer Identification Number (EIN) that you entered from your 1099-R form doesn't match the IRS database.

The error could be as simple as a missing or mistyped letter or number. A payer’s EIN number has 9 digits with the format: 99-9999999.

Other, less common reasons for this rejection include:

The payer's information in the IRS database is wrong.

Your 1099-R form is incorrect or is missing information.

No EIN number? Most likely this is from a foreign payer and they will not have an EIN. In this case the return will need to be mailed.

The payer’s 1099-R form was imported into TurboTax resulting in an undetected error.

E-file reject F1099R-502-02 happens when the employer’s name or federal Employer Identification Number (EIN) that you entered from your 1099-R form doesn't match the IRS database.

Sign in to TurboTax and select Fix my return.

Select Fix it now.

Follow the instructions to fix the error.

Proceed to the Enter your 1099-R screen and compare the Payer Name and Federal ID Number (EIN) on the screen with your 1099-R form.

Important: The payer's name and EIN in TurboTax must exactly match the info on your 1099-R form.

Make any corrections, then select Continue.

Select File when you've finished.

Select Continue at the Welcome back screen (Don't select Fix my return since you've already done that).

Follow the instructions to complete the filing process.

If you’re still getting the rejection and you’re sure the information is correct, try deleting the 1099-R and re-entering it.

In the Federal Income section, find your 1099-R(s) and select Edit.

Manually re-enter your 1099-R and refile the return.
