Entering the 1099-R state 10 digit number (Box#15) correctly at the initial entry does not transfer to the Connecticut 1040 correctly. It ends up with only 9 digits in that return. One 1099-R number looses the leading zero and the another looses the trailing zero.

I don't want to have the state return in error.

What is the solution?

Call Customer Support.

They can do an initial check, then they can get a "diagnostic" copy from you to send to the software team working with that software set. They need a copy with the error to troubleshoot.

What is the TurboTax phone number?

Talked to two different people. Not resolved yet. First person for an hour put me on hold then a second person picked up not knowing I was on hold. Talked for about another hour still not resolved. I was put on hold then the line dropped. I have a case number. I will calling back again. The bottom line is the CT-1040 form that has the State Payer's number should be allowing a 10 digit number. When a 10 digit number is entered an error comes up stating that the number is larger that 10 digits. When in fact it is 10 digits. Obviously there is a bug in the data checking for that item. I can't override that error by manual entry in the forms.

You are required to enter 9 digits when filing with TurboTax. Box 15 on form 1099-R should be 9 digits. If there are zeros before or after numbers you can drop them.

Try using the payer's Federal EIN here if you are unsure about the numbers to use. Some states have as many as 12 digits there but only 9 digits are used for filing income taxes. This number does not interfere with the processing of the tax return as long as CT is properly identified as the state filing.

Click on this link CT Transmitter's page for W-2s, 1099, etc., page 28, to see how CT uses 9 digits to transmit Form 1099-R and other wage reporting documents.

That doesn't sound quite right though.. ..a leading zero I can imagine is immaterial....a trailing zero, however, would seem to be critical. But it's true, I don't know CT coding details.

Thanks for the information. I hope it works.

I will try that by reducing the 10 digit codes removing the starting zero on one 1099-R and removing the trailing zero on the other 1099-R form.

I spent several extra hours trying to track down why TurboTax came up with the error. When the error stated the number was larger than 10 digits when I entered 10 digits. That should have been flagged at the initial data entry for the 1099-R form(s).

Note: The prior year (Turbotax 2022) accepted the 10 digit code and printed it on the CT-1040 form. Go figure.

I spent good money on a product that was said to be 100% accurate when it was not! It has to have a work around. As I stated before I spent several extra hours chasing down your error.

I am not giving a thumbs up.
