The Social Security benefits paid can be taxable depending on the amount of other income being reported on your federal tax return. Being a Florida resident has no bearing on a federal tax return.

Up to 85% of Social Security Retirement/Disability/Survivors benefits becomes taxable when all your other income plus 1/2 your social security reaches:

Married Filing Jointly - $32,000

Single or Head of Household - $25,000

Married Filing Separately - 0

Look at your Form 1040 Line 6a for total benefits paid and on Line 6b for the taxable amount of the benefits (if any)

You can view your Form 1040 plus Schedules 1, 2 and 3 at any time using the online editions. Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the online program screen. Click on Tools. Click on View Tax Summary. Click on Preview my 1040 on the left side of the screen.

Florida does not have an income tax. But yes if you are an employee they take out SS and Medicare taxes out of your paychecks. And if you are self employed you pay self employment tax to cover the SS & Medicare taxes.

If you are getting Social Security benefits then it can be taxable on the federal return.

Up to 85% of Social Security becomes taxable when all your other income plus 1/2 your social security, reaches:

Married Filing Jointly: $32,000

Single or head of household: $25,000

Married Filing Separately: 0
