Received a ssa 1099 for my deceased husband for $494.70 . This was a part b premium refund that was paid in advance of his death on the Medicare website . He was not receiving retirement benefits . The 1099 is payable to me with my ss as beneficiary. Do I have to include on my return and pay taxes on monies I paid for his premium ? Again ?

I'm sorry to hear of your loss. If the benefits are included in box 5 on your SSA-1099 form they will be included with your social security income that will be used to determine how much is taxable on your return. I don't know why the benefits would appear on the SSA form though, especially if he wasn't receiving benefits. If you are now receiving his benefits because they are more than yours, that may be why the refund appears on your SSA-1099 form. You may want to call the social security administration and ask about it.

I am not retired nor receiving survivors benefits at this time . I called ss and they said all outgoing payments are reported on the 1099 . I tried to explain the premiums were not deducted from any benefits as he was not receiving them , we paid the premiums on their website by cc . They basically hung up on me . It’s not alot of money , it’s just the principle

Since the premium was paid by credit card, it reasonably should have been refunded in the same manner and would not have been a reportable income item. However, it has been reported on a tax form, so you should include it as part of your return.

Then, take a look at your Form 1040 line 6b to see if any of the amount reported is being taxed as part of your income. Make a note of the amount on line 6b and then follow the instructions below to make an adjustment to remove it. If there is nothing shown on line 6b, then none of the refund is being taxed and that is all you need to know.

Use these steps if line 6b shows a value included in your income:

Go to the Federal > Wages & Income section

Scroll to the bottom to find Less Common Income

Scroll to find Miscellaneous Income, 1099-A, 1099-C

Scroll to the bottom to find Other Reportable Income

Enter a description for the adjustment and the amount found on line 6b as a negative number

@Urbish
