To be clear - You had medical expenses in 2023 that you paid with out of pocket funds, not reimbursed, in the amount of $162,000?

Medical expenses that were paid by your health insurance are not reported on nor deductible on tax return.

Medical expenses that you paid with out of pocket funds and were reimbursed are not entered on nor deductible on tax return.

I was referencing a general example....I'll lay another out more clearly, I see where that didn't read correctly....

Using $26,000 in medical expenses not covered by insurance - copays, deductibles, noncovered expenses - it bring taxable income to 0.

There is another $11,000 in addition to the $26,000 that doesn't change the return by anything nor bring the taxable income any lower - you can't get lower than the 0.

So can you use that $11,000 on 2024 tax return or do you just lose that as a deduction?

No, there is no carryover for medical deductions. You can only use the medical deductions paid during the tax year. Here is an IRS link for reference or see the paragraph titled "What expenses can you include this year" in Publication 502.
