Could I ask a follow-up question about this? I’ve followed these directions, but after I note that I’ve done a full Roth conversion the form marks itself as complete. In other words, there’s no place to note that the original contributions were post-tax. I’m using the Deluxe version. Any guidance?

My received 1099Rs have "Taxable Amount Not determined" checked even though my IRa accounts have both pre-tax and post tax contributions. Where do I enter the calculated post-tax contribution amount?

Enter your form 1099-R in TurboTax with box 2b checked. Then follow through with the TurboTax interview. You will come to a page where TurboTax will ask whether you have made any nondeductible contributions to your IRA. Answer all the following questions and TurboTax will calculate the taxable portion of your distribution.

Minht1:

Thanks fo the guidance. I think I ws able to enter the information appropriately using your directions.

BTW: I have been having weird trouble recently with my version of TT - clicking on the "File" button at the top has no immediate effect - although in about 15 seconds suddenly a black box apears underneath it. Thankfully I know enough to use an alternative method (CTRL-S) to occasionally save the file.

If you made nondeductible traditional IRA contributions for 2022 then you will enter the IRA contribution with the steps below and TurboTax will calculate the nontaxable part of Form 8606.

If you had a basis (after-tax contributions before 2022) then you will be able to enter them either in the IRA contribution interview (steps 8 and 9) or after you entered all Form 1099-R in the follow-up questions (steps 6 and 7).

To enter the nondeductible contribution to the traditional IRA:

Login to your TurboTax Account

Click on "Search" on the top right and type “IRA contributions”

Click on “Jump to IRA contributions"

Select “traditional IRA”

Answer “No” to “Is This a Repayment of a Retirement Distribution?”

Enter the amount you contributed

Answer “No” to the recharacterized question on the “Did You Change Your Mind?” screen

Answer the next questions until you get to “Any Nondeductible Contributions to Your IRA?” and select “Yes” if you had a nondeductible contribution before this tax year.

Enter your basis in the Traditional IRA from your 2021 Form 8606 line 14 (if you had a basis in the prior year)

On the “Choose Not to Deduct IRA Contributions” screen choose “Yes, make part of my IRA contribution nondeductible” and enter the amount (if you have a retirement plan at work and are over the income limit it will be nondeductible automatically and you only get a warning and then a screen saying $0 is deductible).

To enter the 1099-R conversion:

Click on "Search" on the top right and type “1099-R”

Click on “Jump to 1099-R”

Click "Continue" and enter the information from your 1099-R

Answer questions until you get to “Tell us if you moved the money through a rollover or conversion” and choose “I converted some or all of it to a Roth IRA”

On the "Review your 1099-R info" screen click "Continue"

Answer "yes" to "Any nondeductible Contributions to your IRA?" if you had any nondeductible contributions in prior years.

Answer the questions about the basis from line 14 of your 2021 Form 8606 and the value of all traditional, SEP, and SIMPLE IRAs
