topic 1099R for direct rollover from 403b to traditional IRA arrived after I filed my taxes in Retirement tax questions

I filed my taxes, and then a few days later I received a 1099-R for a direct rollover. I'm guessing that I should wait until my taxes have been fully processed by the taxing authorities, and then file an amended return. Does that sound correct?

The question is, the 1099 shows that the event was non-taxable, a direct rollover, do I still need to file an amended return so that the IRS is happy?

Thank you

Since this results in no changes to any dollar amounts, the only part of Form 1040-X that would be relevant is the explanation section. It seems simpler to just retain your information and provide explanation if the IRS ever questions the rollover, which seems unlikely since the copy of the Form 1099-R sent to the IRS by the plan shows this as a nontaxable rollover and the Form 5498 provided to the IRS by the IRA custodian will show receipt of the rollover.

Yes, if your return has been accepted by the IRS, then you have to file an amended return (1040X) to make changes. But please wait until your refund or payment is processed. Please be aware that you can e-file your 2022 amended federal tax return, but states may require amendments to be printed and filed by mail. Please see How to amend a tax return for instructions. Please see Where's My Amended Return? to check the status of your amended return.

Yes, it is best to file an amendment to show the IRS that this was a nontaxable rollover to avoid questions later.
