There is a provision to post Canadian pension income to TurboTax.

Start with Federal

Wages & Income

Scroll down to Retirement Plans & Social Security

Select Canadian Registered Pension Income

Follow the Interview

This did not work. When I get to wages & income it says "social security". Not what you said. I don't seem to have the option to add CPP.

CPP, OAS, and QPP are subject to a special tax treaty with the US. US residents receiving these pensions are taxed by the US as if the US paid them. TurboTax doesn't have a specific box labelled CPP, OAS or QPP. When using TurboTax to calculate how much to pay the US, in Step by Step view, under "Retirement Plans and Social Security" select the update or start button to the right of "Social Security (SSA-1099, RRB-1099) and enter the total amount you receive from CPP, QPP, OAS, and whatever you receive as stated on box 5 in your SSA-1099 into the "Box 5 Net Benefits for 2022" box TurboTax presents to you.

Don't enter CPP, OAS, or QPP data into the Canadian Registered Pension Income section. RRSPs are private plans. The US taxes Canadian and Quebec government paid pensions as if they are paid by the US. These pensions are not Canadian Registered Pension Income. Reference: IRA Publication 915, page 6.

Per IRS Publication 915:

Under income tax treaties with Canada and Germany, social security benefits paid by those countries to U.S. residents are treated for U.S. income tax purposes as if they were paid under the social security legislation of the United States.

In other words, if you're a U.S. resident, you'd enter your Canadian CPP and OAS benefits as though you'd received a Form SSA-1099 from the Social Security Administration.

Enter it as follows:

For the Download/CD version of TurboTax:

In TurboTax, open your return and search for SSA-1099, then select Jump to in the search results

On the Did you receive Social Security or Railroad Retirement benefits? screen, select Yes

On the Tell us about the benefits you received screen, check the first box for Social Security benefits (Form SSA-1099)

Enter the total Canadian CPP and OAS payments you received during 2022 in Box 5

If you already have something in Box 5 from a previously entered SSA-1099, add your CPP/OAS benefits to the amount already there

In the uncommon situation where taxes were withheld from your payments, enter the total withheld during 2022 in Box 6

Select Continue and follow any additional instructions

In TurboTax online,

1. After sign in, select Pick up where you left off

2. In the Search box, at the right upper corner, type in SSA-1099, then Enter

3. Select the 1st choice on the list - Jump to SSA-1099 /

4. The program will take you directly to screen, Social Security Benefit-Did you receive any Social Security benefits? select Yes to continue
