If your ONLY income is Social Security you are not required to file an income tax return unless you also will receive a 1095A for having marketplace insurance (Obamacare). Or do you have any tax withheld from your SS? If so you can file for a refund. Your mortgage interest has no effect since you cannot get a refund unless you have enough itemized deductions to exceed your standard deduction; and if you have had no tax withheld, there is nothing from which to get a refund.

Who has to file?

http://www.irs.gov/uac/Do-I-Need-to-File-a-Tax-Return%3F

You have not mentioned what state you are in. There are a few states in which there are credits for homeowners who pay property tax or heating bills....if you are in one of those states it might be necessary for you to prepare a federal and state return.

Unless you also received a Form 1095-A for your health insurance through one of the State Marketplace Exchanges or from healthcare.gov then you must file a tax return
