Your tax return is mostly taxable income. If you have any non taxable interest, IRA or 401K withdrawals, social security etc. you need to look at lines 2-6 and subtract the taxable b line from the total a line.

Most types of nontaxable income do not appear on your tax return. Why are you looking for nontaxable income?

What exactly do you mean by nontaxable income? A few types of income, such as the ones that VolvoGirl listed, can be partially taxable. For those, the tax return will show the full amount of income, and how much of it is taxable. Do you include the portion that's not taxable as nontaxable income?

If you're asking about income that is not taxable by your state, you'll need to identify the state and the type of income you think is non taxable (e.g. retirement). In general, the state form usually has a "deductions" section, where income not taxable by the state is deducted from the fedearl income that transfer from federal to state.
