YES you will amend the return LATER after the IRS has fully processed the original return. Even a 1099-R with a code G in box 7 MUST be entered on the return or the IRS will eventually send you an audit letter you will have to respond to later with guess what ... an amended return. New this year, you can efile the amended return however you have until 10/15 to do so thus you don't need to rush.

No, that would not generate a tax liability. TurboTax des not need that 1099-R entered.

Keep a copy with your tax file.

Why would IRS ask for an amendment for a 1099R code G ?

IRS know what code G means.

You would think so BUT the IRS computers look for mismatched INCOME and send out a CP2000 notice to explain the missing income which technically the 1099-R reports in box 1 and is entered as such on the form 1040. The fact that this is a non taxable rollover (which is how it is reported on the tax return) is not taken into consideration when sending out the annoying notice. So either you must take care of the issue now by amending the return OR later in response to the CP2000 notice.
