Thanks macuser_22. Regarding the IRS addresses, this is something that has always confused me: Turbotax has always included my mailing rather than residential address on the 1040 that is electronically submitted to the IRS. So I'm unsure if I should use the state of my address on file with the IRS or the state of my actual residence in determining which IRS address to mail my forms to?

I made after-tax traditional ira contributions for previous years but did not include the 8606 form with my previous tax filings.

I would like to now file those 8606 forms so that I can record my ira cost basis with the IRS.

Is there a way to electronically file only the 8606 form for previous years?

No - they can only be mail filed. You also must use the 8606 for that year. You should attach an explanation as to why you are filing late and ask the IRS to waive the $50 penalty for each 8606 filed late.

You can download and print past years 8606 forms here:

https://apps.irs.gov/app/picklist/list/priorFormPublication.html;jsessionid=k095TsK5VWOc_ojmNm8wcIQz.20?value=8606&criteria=formNumber&submitSearch=Find

Mail to:
