Permanent pension plan filing 1099-R

I installed the TT 2020 to a new PC. I would not be able to link back to my TT from pervious year and need to do the software from scratch. When filing for my pension for life 1099-R, TT 2020 did not ask me what "Simplified Method Used Last Year", example, number of months, annuity start date, and plan cost etc., etc.. It treated my pension for life 1099-R as a lump sum for 2020. As a result, my Federal Tax Due jump up to several thousand dollars. I tried to redo the input form several times and still not getting it correctly. Need help.

Why couldn't you transfer from 2019? Don't you have the .tax2019 file on your computer? Or did you use the online version? There are ways to transfer online to Desktop.

Thank you for your suggestion. I saved my TT 2019 forms and files. Wonder where is this .tax2019 located? Example, in the Installer file? Import file? Forms file? Or the 32bit file? Thanks!

You need the tax data file ending in .tax2019 to transfer into 2020. Do you still have the old computer or your backups? It is not in anything. It is a separate file all by itself.

Your tax files end in .tax or .tax2017, .tax2018 or .tax2019 etc. They should be in your Documents in a Turbo Tax folder. You should also have the pdf files of each year. Or search your computer for all files ending in .tax. Also if you haven't done it, I would open each year in the program and save it as a PDF file, go to File-Save to PDF so you don't need the program installed to view or print your return in the future like to get a mortgage or loan, etc.

What I would do is just copy the whole Turbo Tax folder that is under your Documents. That should be where the .tax files and pdf files are stored. Copy that folder to a flash drive or best yet is to burn it to a CD or DVD and then you will have a backup of them. Then on the new computer copy the folder (or files) from the flash drive to your Documents folder.

If you find it then you can only transfer it into a new blank 2020 return. So you would have to start over. Go to File-New. Then if it doesn't find your 2019 file to transfer from you can browse to where you saved it.

I took your advise and start over. I reopened a new file and selected the .tax2019 file and it works!
