You are entering it in the wrong place. It goes here:

Federal > Wages and Income > Retirement > Social Security

The form 1099-SSA is used to report social security benefits. The payer's federal tax ID number is not listed on the form and don't need 1099-SSA federal id number to enter the benefits.

1099-R and tin number ...turbo tax even highlights the tin number from social security

See Form 1099-R for the form. On the top left is the payer's name and address. Right below it is the Payer's TIN and to the right of it would be your social as the recipient's TIN.

If it is SSA1099, then follow @SweetieJean instructions: Federal > Wages and Income > Retirement > Social Security

I am facing the exact same problem. I spoke with 2 Social Security Offices and was told, after a really long wait time, that SSA does not need to enter a Fed. ID #. BUT turbotax won't let me efile without it. Not sure what to do when it won't let me go on.

Please make sure that you enter your Social Security benefits (Form SSA-1099) in the correct area. You don't need to enter a Federal ID # to enter Social Security benefits. Please see these instructions:

Login to your TurboTax Account
Click on "Search" on the top right and type “Social security income”
Click on “Jump to Social security income”
Answer "Yes" to the question "Did you receive Social Security benefits?" and click “Continue”
Enter your information

My Turbotax 2023 software requires a TIN for social Security information. I do not have a TIN on the 1099-R sent to me from SSA. Please override the requirement to add the TIN for both John C Payne and Carol J Payne

You are trying to enter the SSA-1099 in the wrong section of the TurboTax program -

To enter Social Security benefits reported on form SSA-1099

Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business)
Click on Wages and Income (Personal Income using Home and Business)
Click on I'll choose what I work on (if shown)
Scroll down to Retirement Plans and Social Security
On Social Security (SSA-1099, RRB-1099), click the start or update button

Or enter ssa-1099 in the Search box located in the upper right of the program screen. Click on Jump to ssa-1099

NONE of the supplied 'answers' work. TurboTax is asking for the PAYER'S TIN, that is, the TIN of the United States Government, ***NOT*** the taxpayer or PAYEE TIN. You can't get around this feature in TurboTax - stop saying it is so simple. It is not. Well guess what the SSA doesn't have a TIN because the US Government is NOT a taxpayer. TurboTax should cancel this required feature IMMEDIATELY.

FIX: Enter YOUR SSN in this format: 12-3456789 and it moves on. You're welcome in 2024.

@CherGetInHere We know it's asking for the payer's EIN. BUT BUT people are trying to enter their Social Security SSA-1099 in the WRONG PLACE as a W2 or 1099R! There is nothing to fix. If you enter it as a 1099R or W2 it will end up on the wrong line on your 1040 and the IRS will say you didn't report it.

Enter a SSA-1099, SSA-1099-SM or RRB-1099 under

Federal Taxes (Personal for Home&Business)

Wages and Income

Then scroll down to Retirement Plans and Social Security

Then the second line - Social Security (SSA-1099. RRB-1099) - click the Start or Revisit button

This is from 2020 but there is no Payer EIN box on the SS entry screen.

Doing my 2025 Taxes and its asking for a TIN number: XX-XXXXXX for a SSA-1099 form. Can I leave it blank or what should I use?

If it's asking for an EIN number you are entering it in the wrong place. There is no EIN on social security SSA-1099. So delete it and enter it in the right place.

Enter a SSA-1099, SSA-1099-SM or RRB-1099 under

Federal Taxes

Wages and Income

Then scroll down to Retirement Plans and Social Security

Then the second line - Social Security (SSA-1099. RRB-1099) - click the Start or Revisit button

After you enter it keep going. There are follow up questions you need to answer. Especially the next screen asks if you lived in a Foreign country. Should be No.
