topic I'm stuck in a check this entry loop. QBI Passive Op Loss in Investors & landlords

I'm stuck in a "Check this Entry" loop: QBI Passive Op Loss must be entered. I'm not sure what number to put there, but doesn't seem to accept any number. I've tried zero and I've tried entering the passive disallowed loss from the smart worksheet carryover QBI line item H on my 2024 tax return. Nothing works!! Help!! Where do I find this number and why isn't Turbotax completing this from my previous return for me?

Please clarify if this question relates to a Schedule C business or to a rental property. It would also be helpful if you would post a screenshot of the entire browser window when this message appears.

I'm also stuck in this loop. Any number that is entered prompts another error window to fix errors. I spoke to an Intuit support person and they are sure this is a bug. She mentioned that doing the State Tax with another caller fixed the problem. But it didn't fix mine. I have rental properties for a decade now and have never run into this problem. I am using the online version and cannot find a way out of this loop.

If the message you see relates to a rental property (Schedule E), try working through the property interview again. In TurboTax Online, navigate to your Rental Property Summary page and look for Less Common Situations at the bottom. Click the pencil icon to the right of "Carryovers, limitations, at risk info, etc." and work through the interview to enter your carryovers. Be sure to complete all tables that may appear and continue until you reach the property summary page again.

For self-employed business carryovers (Schedule C), navigate to your Business Summary page and look for Uncommon Situations at the bottom. Click the pencil icon to the right of "Unused Expenses, carryovers..." and work through the interview to enter your carryovers. Be sure to complete all tables that may appear and continue until you reach the business summary page again.

Hi Patricia, thank you. I went back through the section again. This time I answered that it does qualify for QBI and then stepped through. Now TT did all of the calculations and filled in the right numbers. The description of QBI is very poor but that appears because the tax code itself is so poorly written. In any case thanks for the help. Anyone else running into this, go through all of the QBI steps at the bottom of the Rental Property forms.

TLDR; Keep going back to the Schedule E / carryover form and resetting the form to the correct values until the error goes away.

I had a similar problem. I followed the TT AI's recommendation to delete and re-enter the Schedule E information (deleting caused all past history/assets to be removed with no way to import again from last year). After redoing Schedule E from scratch, I still got the QBI Passive Op Loss validation error.

I followed these instructions - went back through the Schedule E / carryover section, entered 0's where there were blanks. Still got the QBI Passive Op Loss validation error.

Went back again and found that TT had put the sum of the Op Loss in a previous year (that was previously set to 0). Set back to 0, failed to validate again - this time "Op Loss must be less than $$$".

Went back again and found that TT had put more numbers in previous Op Loss years. Set all to 0. Finally, the form validated.
