In order to mark a child as a student, you will need to walk through all the questions in the personal info section regarding that student. Based on the answers you provide, the person will be marked as a dependent if they qualify. If someone should be your qualifying child, then you will need to go back through your responses and double check your answers. Be sure to read each question carefully before answering.

The following criteria must be met to claim someone as a qualifying child:

Your child (including adopted and foster children), your sibling, or a descendent of any of them.
Age 18 or younger at the end of the tax year OR under 24 (and younger than you and your spouse) if they are a full-time student
Lived with you for more than 6 months during the tax year
They did not provide more than half of their own support (social security does not count)
They did not file a joint return, unless it was to claim a refund

If the student is under 19, you will not get the student status question, in the personal info interview. At that point, it's only used to determine if the child can be a dependent. Since he is under 19, his student status is not relevant, for the dependency test.

You'll get a chance later, in educational expenses section, to identify the child as a student.
