Hello. I am a senior in a university. I have a very good scholarship from my school and every year i get a 1098-T form. The past two years I have worked with a W-2 form. Can I add the 1098-T from past years this with my W-2 2024 form to get more money back?

No, you cannot use past year tax documents on a 2024 return. You can enter 2024 tax documents on a 2024 tax return.

Q. Can I get money back from my school scholarships, by filing my 1098-T?

A. No. If anything, having too much scholarship money would result in taxable income, You might owe, not get money back.

Q. Can I add my 2024 1098-T with my 2024 W-2 form to get more money back?

A. Unlikely. But it depends on more info.

There's a new urban myth among college students that says they can get a $1000 from the government just for filing a tax form. For most of them, they simply aren't eligible. A full time unmarried student, under age 24, even if you don't qualify as a dependent, is only eligible for the refundable portion of the American Opportunity Credit if he supports himself by working. You cannot be supporting yourself on parental support, 529 plans or student loans & grants. It is usually best if the parent claims that credit.

You cannot claim the (up to) $1000 refundable credit if you are, or can be, claimed as a dependent by someone else.

Reference: Line 7 instructions for form 8863.

https://www.irs.gov/instructions/i8863#en_US_2024_publink53002gd0e674

Q. Can I get money back from my past school scholarships and 1098-Ts?

A. If you are somehow eligible for something, you may file amended returns for those years, going back 3 years. But, as explained above, I don't know of anything you are eligible for.

We need more information on what it is that you are trying to do (what is that you think you are suppose to get?).
