I suggest you make the payment with the IRS directly here. Be sure to mark it as an extension payment and this creates the automatic extension so Form 4868 is not required.

Your state may have the same ability or may do an automatic extension with the federal or you may need to file a state extension form. See Do I need to file an extension for my personal state taxes?

Hi .

"I want to get an extension for Federal and State taxes. The IRS and the state tax authorities asked me for the reason, and I chose extension.

My question is, if I pay the same amount I owed last year, is that enough to obtain an extension or should I ask a tax preparer to file Form 4868 through their software, or is it sufficient to use the IRS and state payments option I found to extend my taxes?"

Thanks
