Q. Can Graduate students deduct the cost of tuition?

A. Yes

Q. Can Graduate students deduct the cost of books?

A. No

There is no actual ''deduction", anymore. But there is a tax credit. Grad students are not eligible for the more generous American Opportunity Credit (AOC or AOTC), but are eligible for the non refundable Lifetime Learning Credit (LLC). Tuition and fees are eligible expenses. Books, computers and supplies are not eligible, unless included in the course fee. The LLC is 20% of tuition paid, up to $10K.
