Follow up question to my question re 1099Q and 1098T; how do you input the educational expenses in order for Turbo Tax to create the 1099Q worksheet? Once I input the 1099Q amount Turbo Tax says we don't qualify for any educational credits and gives us no way to enter the expenses--just throws us back to the original input point. Since my son has very little income should we put the information on his return? Or is there some way to bypass the statement that we don't qualify for any educational credits on our (parents) return?

The 1099-Q and 1099-T are only informational documents. . The numbers on it are not required to be entered onto your tax return.

Take the advice received: just don't enter either one. The interview is complicated because it has to handle multiple scenarios.

But, if it makes you feel more secure having the work sheet: Enter the 1099-Q first. Then enter the 1098-T (even though it's in the student's name) later in the educational expenses section. To get the screen to enter Room & Board, answer yes when asked if you have book expenses. TurboTax tend to allocate part of your dependent's college expenses to claim the Tuition credit, even if you are not eligible or otherwise did not claim it.

In the education interview, you should reach a screen titled "Choosing a larger education Credit". Verify that TT has entered 0. You can change it, if needed.

or

Go through the education section again. Go through the entire education interview until you reach a screen titled "Your Education Expenses Summary". Click edit next to the student's name. That should take you to a screen “Here’s your Education Summary”. Click edit next to “Education Information”. When you get to the screen titled “Amount Used to Calculate Education Deduction or Credit”, verify the amount you want to use or change it.
